Effect of a Socratic Animated Agent on Student Performance
نویسنده
چکیده
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a Socratic animated agent on user performance in a computerbased CD player disassembly simulation. Vocational Education students were randomly assigned to one of two versions of the simulation. One version offered text-based feedback in the form of statements; the other one featured an animated agent providing hints and clues. Results showed that performance (measured by number of wrong tool choices) did not signifi cantly differ between groups. Similarly, both groups stopped making wrong tool choices at approximately the same point in the disassembly process. The short exposure to the treatment may account for these results. Suggested modifi cations that could be incorporated in future studies are proposed in light of this factor.

An Animated Pedagogical Agent that Interacts Affectively with the Student
This paper aims at the conception of an affective and animated pedagogical agent responsible for the interface of the environment with the student and for considering the affective aspects of the interaction with the student in a learning environment. The agent catches the student's affective state by his observable behavior, and applies tactics according to the student's affective state. We be...
متن کاملConstruction and Evaluation of Animated Teachable Agents
This article describes the design decisions, technical approach, and evaluation of the animation and interface components for an agent-based system that allows learners to learn by teaching. Students learn by teaching an animated agent using a visual representation. The agent can answer questions about what she has been taught and take quizzes. The agent’s performance provides students feedback...
متن کاملSocratic Seminar with Data: A Strategy to Support Student Discourse and Understanding.
A Socratic seminar can be a powerful tool for increasing students' ability to analyze and interpret data. Most commonly used for text-based discussion, we found that using Socratic seminar to engage students with data contributes to student understanding by allowing them to reason through and process complex information as a group. This approach also provides teachers with insights about studen...
متن کاملThe Role of Initiative in Tutorial Dialogue
This work is the first systematic investigation of initiative in human-human tutorial dialogue. We studied initiative management in two dialogue strategies: didactic tutoring and Socratic tutoring. We hypothesized that didactic tutoring would be mostly tutor-initiative while Socratic tutoring would be mixedinitiative, and that more student initiative would lead to more learning (i.e., task succ...
متن کاملAnimated Agents for Language Conversation Training
Animated agents are cartoon-style characters that facilitate the learning process. We take an animated agent approach to improve English conversation skills of Japanese students. In particular, we use animated agents as conversational partners in interactive role-playing environments (theater, drama, and games). In order to engage the language student, animated agents feature believability-enha...
